With skill, hard work, and a bit of luck, a photograph that was torn into little pieces can be brought back to its original appearance.
The process of restoring a torn photograph consists of assembling the jigsaw puzzle in separate pieces and carefully matching the edges. Using archival tape, the pieces are joined together with as little separation as possible.
Once all the available pieces of a photograph are put together and, if needed, adhered to a backing board to prevent shifting and separation, a high-resolution scan of the photograph is made. The captured digital image is then retouched to replicate the missing areas and fill in the tears between the joined pieces. If necessary, color correction and colorization are applied to a photograph, and the restored photograph is printed on fine art paper to match the texture and tone of the original print.
