The gray skyline of New York City isn't what first comes to mind of art experts or aficionados whenever the name of Henri Matisse is mentioned. But there he is, the great master himself, relaxing on a rooftop with the view of Queensborough Bridge, Roosevelt Island, and Queens in the background, in the photograph taken in 1930 by his son Pierre, whose gallery on 57th Street in New York City became an influential part of the Modern Art movement in America.
Restoration and reproduction of the photograph were commissioned by the residence at 10 Mitchell Place, where Henri Matisse resided during his stay in New York. After the original print was cleaned, it was scanned and digitally edited to restore the image quality and remove the appearance of the chemical stains and all other damages that the photograph sustained over the years. A large print was produced to be displayed in the foyer of the building.
