This exceptionally rare and valuable 17th-century map of London, printed for and dedicated to Sir Robert Vyner, Lord Mayor of London (1674), suffered cuts and tears when the frame it was mounted in broke and the glass shuttered during shipping.
After carefully removing the map from the frame and detaching it from the mounting board, vacuum suction was used to clean the surface of the print from any remaining bits of broken glass to avoid any chance of additional damages and scratches.
Following the surface cleaning, the print was washed and de-acidified to prevent any further damage or deterioration. The tears caused by the shattered glass were carefully mended and filled in with paper pulp of a matching color. Watercolors and Chinese ink were used to touch up the repaired areas to achieve a seamless appearance for the restored print.
