Sebastian Wintermute is a New York City–based fine art photographer whose work interweaves architectural elements with illusionary and surreal components, creating images that transport viewers into another universe—another world where the ordinary does not exist, and where dreams and legends are mirrored as reality. Growing up, Sebastian was fortunate to have opportunities to backpack and hitchhike across Europe and Asia. While studying art and history, he visited great museums and world-renowned art collections; worked on archaeological excavations, where he got his palms callused and his back sunburned; witnessed the Aurora Borealis over the Lapland tundra, sunrises across the Mongolian grasslands, and sunsets over the Great Pyramids; went shipwreck diving in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and along the Atlantic Coast; and rode vintage motorcycles from border to border across the United States. During his travels and throughout his life in New York City, Sebastian met many talented painters, photographers, musicians, and performers who taught him to see the world through the prism of personal experience and imagination. Sebastian’s artistic vision and approach continued to evolve through his study of the lives and works of remarkable abstract and surrealist artists of the 20th century, as well as ancient mythology, modern poetry, and the art of storytelling. From this blend of influences, genres, and techniques, Sebastian developed a distinctive visual language, an equilibrium expressed through images composed of intricate details, symmetry, and contrasts between vivid color and the serenity of black and white. Sebastian’s artistic process is not strictly guided by a predetermined formula. Instead, it unfolds organically, shaped by his visions and, perhaps more importantly, by seemingly serendipitous encounters. The photographic manipulation and retouching employed in creating his art goes far beyond conventional enhancement or correction. Whether working in the traditional darkroom or using the latest digital tools, Sebastian consistently strives to transform simple imagery into something that exists somewhere between reality and dream. An expert in the history of photographic techniques and a skilled photo editor, Sebastian is frequently called upon to lend his expertise to projects involving rare, antique, and one-of-a-kind photographs and images.
